A face held in shadow
The expression is the centre of the tattoo. Lighter tones across the face draw the eye inward, while the hair and horns form a dark frame. The hand interrupts that frame and gives the portrait a second point of interest before the gaze travels down toward the skull.
The surrounding pale shapes feel almost like gaps in smoke. Against the dense black areas, those spaces keep the outline alive. They also let the subject stand apart from the skin without placing it inside a simple rectangular border.
Where realism meets character
The face is treated with soft shading, while the silhouette is more graphic. That combination is useful for a fantasy subject: the expression feels tangible, but the horns, symbols and surrounding forms can move beyond the limits of an ordinary portrait.
