The tension in a split portrait
The composition asks the eye to cross from one side of the face to the other. On one side, layered lines feel drawn and restless. On the other, small areas of colour define the familiar makeup. The eyes and mouth connect the halves even though the treatments pull in different directions.
That contrast is the main event. The surrounding marks and lettering frame the face, but they do not need to explain it. The image is strongest when the two expressions can be read at once.
Expression before extra detail
A character portrait depends on a few choices being right: the reference, the crop and the space given to the features. More background does not automatically make it stronger. A clear expression and a deliberate outline can carry the image before any supporting marks are added.
Here, the vertical split follows the length of the placement. It gives the face room without turning the composition into a wide scene. The selective colour also creates emphasis without requiring every part of the tattoo to use the same treatment.
