The ship is the first landmark. Its sails rise through the centre of the back, while the map stretches outward across the shoulders. The lower half takes a darker turn: the eye moves from the open lines of the chart into the heavier shapes of sea life and treasure.
There is a sense of a story unfolding, but it comes from the arrangement of the objects rather than a written plot. A route, a vessel and something hidden beneath the surface leave room for the viewer to imagine what happens beyond the frame.
Many details, one direction
A back piece with this many subjects needs a clear order. Here, the large ship comes first. The chart gives it a setting, and the compass and surrounding forms support the journey without competing equally for attention. Black and grey keeps the different textures inside one visual world.
