General safety notes for a healing tattoo
Aftercare can differ with the dressing, placement and the instructions given for your tattoo. Keep the written instructions from your appointment and follow that one plan. The notes below explain general hygiene and warning signs; they do not replace advice from a healthcare professional.
Start with the instructions you received
Tattooing breaks the skin barrier. Public health sources advise following the practitioner’s aftercare instructions and using good hand hygiene before touching the area. Different dressings may have different removal or replacement instructions, so avoid combining several routines from friends, videos and product labels.
General care principles
Keep hands clean
Wash and dry your hands before touching the tattoo or its dressing. Avoid unnecessary touching, scratching or picking.
Keep the area protected
Follow the written dressing instructions. Avoid tight or dirty clothing rubbing against the area while it is healing.
Avoid soaking while healing
Healthdirect advises avoiding swimming and baths until the tattoo has completely healed. Ask if you are unsure how this applies to your dressing.
Once the tattoo has healed, Healthdirect recommends high-SPF sunscreen on the tattoo. Do not put sunscreen or any other product on a healing tattoo unless it fits the instructions you were given or a healthcare professional advises it.
When to contact a doctor
Some early tenderness, redness or swelling can occur, but worsening symptoms need attention. Singapore MOH guidance on skin infections and open wounds advises seeing a GP for signs such as:
- Redness, warmth, swelling or pain that is worsening or spreading.
- Pus or unusual discharge.
- Fever or chills.
- A wound that is not improving.
Go to the emergency department for severe pain, high fever and chills, rapid progression of swelling, or other urgent symptoms described by Singapore MOH. The FDA also advises contacting a healthcare professional for concerns about infection, rash or another reaction after a tattoo.
