Light and darkness do not have a single tattoo meaning. One person sees balance; another sees a public identity and a private self. The strongest starting point is your own sentence about the idea, not a list of supposedly universal symbols.

Pick a relationship, not just two colours
A small figure with a larger shadow can suggest ambition or protection. A face divided by light can express uncertainty or two sides of a personality. A pale opening inside a dark shape can represent space, absence or a new direction. None of these interpretations needs to be shared by everyone who sees the tattoo.
Make the metaphor visible
- Choose one main subject and one contrast, rather than several competing symbols.
- Decide which part should be understood immediately and which can remain private.
- Describe whether the mood should be calm, threatening, playful or unresolved.
If you use the phrase “shadow self,” explain what you mean in ordinary language. A tattoo can record a personal reflection without being presented as psychological treatment.
Bring that short explanation to a custom tattoo discussion with Yuyi, along with visual references for the mood.
